The service life of sandwich panels and ways to increase it

14Jul

Sandwich panels are appreciated not only for their quick installation and good thermal insulation properties, but also for their long service life. However, the durability of a building depends not only on the quality of the material itself. Of great importance are the operating conditions, compliance with installation technology and regular monitoring of the condition of structures.
With the right choice of panels and proper installation, they are able to maintain their characteristics for several decades. Therefore, even at the design stage, it is necessary to determine which factors affect the service life and how to avoid premature wear.
How long do sandwich panels last?
When using high-quality materials and complying with construction requirements, the service life of sandwich panels is usually at least 30-40 years. Some manufacturers estimate the potential life of structures at 50 years or more if the panels are operated under normal conditions without serious mechanical damage and constant exposure to an aggressive environment.
Durability is achieved by combining several structural elements. Metal linings protect the insulation from external influences, and the polymer coating prevents the development of corrosion and retains the appearance of the surface for many years. The following factors directly affect the service life::
• quality of steel and protective coating;
• type of insulation;
• correct installation;
• climatic conditions;
• Regular maintenance.
Even the highest-quality panels will not be able to fully realize their resource if the requirements for fastening, sealing joints or the construction of a supporting frame were violated during installation.
What shortens the service life
Most of the problems arise not because of the material itself, but because of errors during construction or further operation. Moisture ingress into the joints, damage to the protective coating, or constant shock loads gradually worsen the condition of the structure. The most common causes of premature wear are:
• the use of unsuitable fasteners;
• violation of the tightness of the joints;
• damage to the polymer coating during installation;
• lack of timely repair of scratches and chips;
• exposure to aggressive chemicals;
• Permanent mechanical damage.
If the protective layer of the metal is broken and the damage remains unattended for a long time, the likelihood of corrosion foci increases. For this reason, it is recommended to fix even small defects immediately after detection.
How to increase the service life of the panels
It is possible to extend the service life without complicated maintenance. The main task of the owner is to prevent the accumulation of damage and regularly monitor the condition of the structure. Practice shows that the following measures bring the greatest benefit::
• Carry out periodic inspection of the facade and roof.
• Clean surfaces from dirt without using abrasive materials.
• Check the tightness of joints after heavy precipitation and temperature fluctuations.
• Timely repair minor damage to the protective coating.
Special attention should be paid to the attachment points, corner joints and areas of attachment of finishing elements. This is where the first signs of leak failure most often appear, which are easier to eliminate at an early stage.
When choosing high-quality sandwich panels and following the installation technology, you can count on decades of reliable operation without loss of basic characteristics. Regular inspection, timely maintenance and careful handling make it possible to get as close as possible to the estimated service life of 40-50 years, while maintaining the strength, thermal insulation and attractive appearance of the building.

The resistance of sandwich panels to the climate of Uzbekistan

The climate of Uzbekistan places high demands on building materials. In summer, the air temperature often exceeds +40 °C, in winter frosts up to -20 °C are possible in some regions, and sudden fluctuations between day and night temperatures create additional stress on the enclosing structures. Therefore, when choosing sandwich panels, it is important to […]
